The
Workhouse
Children

Before
1834
Register
of parish apprentices 1830 - 1844 (D-WOP/3/1). This
is a register of poor children who were apprenticed. Information
includes name of apprentice, date of indenture, age, parent's name,
name of person to who they were assigned, their trade and term of
apprenticeship.
Poor
relief ledgers 1803 - 1837 (D-WOP/2/1-2). These volumes record monies
paid and received from overseers in various areas. Shows the name
of the overseer, and amount paid and to whom.
Wolverhampton
overseers' accounts 1832 - 1833 (D-WOP/4/1). These accounts show
the names of overseers, amounts of monies paid and received, and
from and to which areas.
Wolverhampton
vestry book 1815 - 1876 (D-WV/1/1). Labelled "Overseer's minute
book", this volume contains records of meetings held at the Vestry
with overseers, churchwardens and parishioners present. Includes
date and place of meeting, lists of people appointed to positions
and decisions made.
Wolverhampton
poor rate books 1777-1829 (D-WOP/5/1-27) These volumes include names
of streets, occupiers, annual value, and annual rate. Details of
entry vary over time.
Extracts
from the Bilston workhouse register 1801 - 1808 (DX-808) The extracts
mostly contain information about certain named people who were inmates
in the workhouse.
Extracts
from churchwardens accounts of charges for building workhouse infirmary
1741 (D-JSR/44/166). This volume records the amount of money required
for the building of the infirmary, as well as specific details of
how much was paid to whom, and what for.
Extracts
relating to Wolverhampton and Bilston from the report of the royal
commission on the poor laws 1833 (L36p) This volume shows how Wolverhampton
was split into different areas for poor law purposes, and shows
the population and amount of poor rate.
The
State
of the Poor 1797, Sir
Frederic Morton Eden, extracts relating to wolverhampton (L362)
. This is a photocopy of parts of the book relating to Wolverhampton.
Parochial reports include earnings and expenses, baptisms, burials,
and list of poor receiving out pay.
"Bushbury
1750-1864, M Jones (L283p). Chapter 7 in this volume describes poverty
in Bushbury. This includes references to the poor rate, children
being apprenticed, how the poor were treated, and examples of families
and individuals being returned to their original parish.
Poor
Relief in Staffordshire 1662-1840: Local History Source Book 2 (S36).
This volume includes information including treatment of specific
groups, overseer's accounts and applications for relief.

Wolverhampton
overseers' minute books 1860-1910 (D-WOP/1/1-11) These records include
information for dates of meetings and those present, apologies,
details of payments, bank balances, decisions made about the poor
rate, and occupations and addresses of those wishing to become overseers.
Heath
Town Overseer's minute book 1913 - 1927 (C-UD-HT) Information includes
the date of meeting, who attended, and decisions made about the
amount of poor rate.
Rough
account book of the Wolverhampton Overseers' 1834 - 1835 (CMB-WOL-D-CE-17/11).
A very rough account book showing the amounts of monies going out
and where to, also dates for payments and totals.
Out
relief payments accounts 1896-1912 (D-JSR/44/90). This photocopy
shows the amount of out relief paid during each quarter, total amount
paid, and average amounts per week for each of 7 districts.
Wolverhampton
Union poor rate returns 1857-1912 and returns of guardians elected
1868 - 1915 (DX-174). The first half of this volume contains posters
showing receipts and expenditures, as well as salaries of named
officers. The second half has posters of Guardians elected, showing
names of those nominated, their occupation and number of votes.
"Poor
of Wolverhampton", "Historical Sketches of the Midland Counties"
1883 (D-GBM/4) A collection of newspaper cuttings pasted into a
book. Between pages 160-175 there are various articles about the
poor and workhouses. Page 192 shows an Election of Guardians poster,
and a loose clipping on a Guardian's meeting.
The
Poor Law in Wolverhampton 1870-1900 DE Wood (L36). This thesis
gives details about the introduction of the 1834 Poor Law Act, and
events afterwards. It also describes Wolverhampton from 1750 onwards,
giving details of population, out relief, workhouse, inmates and
administration
Wolverhampton
Red Books 1892-1959/60 (L91). These volumes give names of Poor Rate
collectors and Overseers of the Poor, names and salaries of chief
officers of the Workhouse and Cottage Homes, and the number of people
receiving relief.
Social
Conditions in the Black Country 1800-1900, GJ Barnsby (S3) This
volume contains a chapter on the poor, some information pre-1834
but most post-1834, including details of the different workhouses,
a list of Guardians and occupations, problems in the workhouse,
increase in Poor expenditure, food etc.

Lease
of the old workhouse to Chubb and Sons 1841 (DB-8/4). A photocopy
of the original, showing that the lease of the workhouse in Old
Mill Lane, Wolverhampton was taken over by Chubb and Sons.

about Trysull workhouse. There are further details in the August

Children
Infant
Life Protection Act Committee signed minutes 1895 - 1899 (PU-WOL).
This volume is split into the Infant Life Protection Committee,
and the Workhouse Accommodation Committee. The first gives details
of members present, chairman and decisions made concerning the Act.
The second half gives details of those present, decisions made about
the Chairman and a discussion about engaging an architect to design
a new workhouse.
Cottage
Homes Committee signed minutes 1890 - 1930 (PU-WOL). These volumes
include information as to the date, those present, decisions about
holidays, repairs, children's clothing, punishments and purchasing
of goods.
School
Committee signed minutes 1885 - 1890 (PU-WOL). This includes information
including date, those present, those appointed to positions, and
changes in timetable.
Boarding
Out And Children Act Committee signed minutes 1910 - 1930 (PU-WOL).
These volumes include information such as date, those esent, named
cases of children and decisions made, medical problems and a discussion
about the amount of allowance for the children.
Cottage
Homes school log books 1897-1930 (D-COT). Information includes date,
name of person in charge, details of attendance, holidays, exams,
illness, number of children, people hired and supplies received.
Register
of Children 1890 - 1898 (D-COT). This includes information such
as date of admission, name, sex, weight, where born, religion, home
sent to, name of relative, date of discharge, etc.
Daily
Registers 1953/4 - 1975/7 (D-COT) The documents give name of child,
date admitted to Cottage Home, date discharged, and remarks about
the children.
Wolverhampton
Journal (LO7). September 1903 issue includes an article "Wolverhampton
poor children on Cannock Chase". This describes which schools were
involved, and who was responsible for the trips.
