Ordnance Survey

Large-scale Ordnance Survey maps are very useful to family historians and those at a scale of 1:2500 (25 inches to a mile) were produced for the Wolverhampton area in the following years: 1880s, 1902, 1919-23, 1938 (incomplete) and 1950s/60s. These can be very helpful in locating streets to check in census records.
Since the 1960s/70s the mapping of urban areas like Wolverhampton has been at the more detailed scale of 1:1250. It should be noted that Ordnance Survey maps (or any maps based on them) that are less than 50 years old are still in copyright and there are restrictions on copying extracts from these maps.

The town centre area was also mapped in the 1880s at
a scale of 1:500 (126.7 inches to 1 mile) and the extra content possible at this scale can be invaluable in family history research.

Ordnance Survey maps do not give any indication of the height of buildings or the presence of cellars. Although some building names (e.g. of pubs, large houses and factories) may be given on the larger scale maps (such as 1:2500), house numbers are not generally included until the 1950s. It can sometimes be possible to work out house numbers on a map by comparing the plan with census records or street listings in trade directories.
