Walter Martin
Hughes, 1936 - 1937
Hughes was
a draper and furnisher with his own business, Walter Hughes Ltd,
in Highfield Road, Bradley. In November 1936 he was elected mayor.
On the 18th March 1937 he and John Tomkys Baker, a councillor and
alderman, opened the 2000th council house at 25 Park Road, Millfields.
On the same day he was present at the opening ceremony of the new
Library, Museum and Art Gallery, a ceremony performed by the previous
mayor TR Wood. In July 1937 Hughes presented the local philanthropist
J Luther Greenway with the Freedom of the Borough. Hughes died on
January 9th 1943.
