Harold Aubery Humphries, 1965 - 1966
Harold Aubery
Humphries was born in 1918 and lived in Bilston all his life. He
was an engineering inspector at Laystall Cromard Ltd., Dixon Street,
Wolverhampton, a firm that had provided empolyment for two previous
mayors, Councillor GA Jones and Alderman EW Bold. Married with four
children, he served during World War II as a regular army corporal
until he was taken prisoner by the German Army after the disaster
at Dunkirk. He spent the next five years as a prisoner-of-war. He
was elected to Bilston Borough Council and represented Bradley Ward
from 1960. As a councillor he was chairman of the Health Committee,
as well as being chairman of Bilston Labour Party. He was also vice-chairman
of the managers of Bradley St Martin's Junior and Bradley Infants
Schools, and was a member of the South-East Staffordshire Divisional
Education Executive, Wolverhampton and District Marriage Guidance
Council, the Area Health Committee and the Local Employment Committee.
He became the borough's last mayor on the 27th May 1965, and served
until Bilston was absorbed into Wolverhampton Borough Council on
1st April 1966.
