Robert Campbell, 1961 - 1962
During World
War Two Campbell served with the Royal Artillery, being with the
8th Army for almost four years in the Middle East, and in France
and Germany from D-Day to demobilisation in 1946. After the war
Campbell, an Ulsterman, moved to Wolverhampton where he was employed
by Villiers Engineering Company Ltd, before starting his own fish
merchants. As a member of the Conservative Party he was elected
to Bilston Borough Council in 1954. He was elected mayor for the
period 1961 to 1962, and directed Bilston's defence against the
Boundary Commission's intention to amalgamate Bilston with Wolverhampton.
After amalgamation, Campbell served as a member of Wolverhampton
Borough Council, as deputy mayor in 1967, and as mayor in 1968.
