Glyn Harries
Jones, 1955 - 1956 and 1964 - 1965
Jones was a
schoolmaster who first stood for election to Bilston Council in
1947. He was a Labour Party representative for the Town Hall Ward
but was defeated in the elections by his Conservative opponent,
Edward Beards. He successfully stood again in 1950. During his career
he represented both the New Town and Ettingshall Wards. Soon after
becoming mayor in 1955, Jones accompanied Bob Edwards MP to the
opening ceremony of the Sons of Rest Pavillion in Hickman Park,
Bilston, built in honour of those who had died during the World
Wars. He was re-elected as mayor in 1964, making him the second
of the Bilston mayors to hold the position in two separate municipal
years, the other being EW Bold. On the 27th July 1964, Jones was
present at the opening ceremony of the Bilston Public Swimming Baths.
