Vera Chettle, 1949 - 1950
Audery Agnes
Vera Chettle was the daughter of an architect and surveyor. Her
paternal grandfather was Rev WW Chettle, the second vicar at Bradley,
a position he held for twenty years. Audery ran a school in Bradley
for handicapped children, a position that won her great respect
in the community. Her family had long associations with St Martin's
Church in Bradley. Audery became Bilston's only woman Mayor in 1949;
her deputy mayor was her sister Miss E Chettle. During her mayoral
year she lived at "Aubyn", King Street, Bradley.
