Arthur Darbey,
1944 - 1945
Arthur Darbey
was born into a Bradley family in 1891. He was educated at the Bilston
Wesleyan School where he won a scholarship to attend the West Bromwich
Grammar School. After leaving school, Darbey went to Dudley Training
College. He became a teacher, but left the profession in 1927 to
study law, though he did briefly return to education to lecture
in law at the Wolverhampton Technical College. He had been the Deputy
Town Clerk for Halesowen before he joined Bilston Borough Council
in 1933. He joined the Education Committee the following year, and
during his council career sat on most committees. He was Chairman
of the Estates Committee, the Library and Art Gallery Committee,
the Educational Staffing Committee, and Vice-chairman of Bilston's
Development and Post-war Reconstruction Committee. Darbey was a
keen sportsman and captained the Bilston Tennis Team. Additionally,
he was President of the Bilston Golf Club, and a member of the Bilston
Bowling Club. Both Darbey and his wife had connections with the
Bilston and District Prisoner-of-War Next of Kin Club, of which
he was Chairman. He organised the Red Cross Penny-a-Week Fund. In
1944 Darbey served as the Vice-president to the Bilston British
Legion.
