Moses Ironmonger, 1856 - 1857

The Ironmonger family name has been associated with the escape of Charles II. Moses Ironmonger came from humble roots and was orphaned when he was eighteen. He had a successful rope manufacturing business in Brick-kiln Street, Wolverhampton, and was a Liberal with a continuously sustained interest in local affairs. During 1856 he became an alderman of the bench and the following year was appointed Chief Magistrate of the Borough. He was elected mayor, unopposed, in 1857 and again in 1868. A prominent churchman, he sat as Governor for the Grammar School. He died in 1887, aged seventy-nine, having been ill for a considerable time. Ironmonger's son, Thomas, carried on the business and his son Charles succeeded him. Ironmonger & Co Ltd went into liquidation in 1902.
