John Lewis, 1931 - 1932 (Feb)

John Lewis was born in Heath Town on the 2nd May 1865 to a family that originated from Montgomeryshire, and who were manufacturers of steel travelling trunks. From about 1900 Lewis served on Heath Town District Council. He was a member of the Assessment Committee and the School Board. Lewis also served on Staffordshire Local Education Committee as well as Heath Town Nursing Fund Committee. He was the first mayor of Wolverhampton to be elected from the new areas after the extension of the borough in 1926, and was elected in 1931. Prior to his mayoral position, Lewis was elected Alderman of the newly extended borough in 1927. He was a member and trustee of Heath Town Wesleyan Chapel as well as acting as the Circuit Steward of the Darlington Street Methodist Circuit. He died during his office as Mayor in 1932 and the previous mayor, Joseph Haddock, concluded the term of office.
