Thomas
Austin Henn, 1919 - 1920
Thomas Henn's father was a pioneer of the Sunday Morning
Adult School Movement. Henn, born in 1871, became the principal
of the family firm TA Henn and Co, which had over one hundred years'
experience in the making and selling of timepieces and the retailing
of jewellery. His business was in Princess Street, and in 1933 he
acquired another business known as Kemp and Wilcox, formerly of
Queen's Square and later of Lichfield Street. In 1904 he was elected
as a Progressive Liberal for Dunstall Ward, a position he maintained
until his appointment as Alderman in 1923. He became Mayor in 1919
and a borough magistrate in 1927. He took a leading part in the
initiation of the slum clearance plans and re-housing schemes; and
was also involved in other schemes such as the appointment of health
visitors and home helps, the establishment of baby clinics, and
dispensaries for the treatment of tuberculosis. He was chairman
of the Health Committee for twenty-one years. He was also chairman
of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee. From 1892 he had been
a local preacher associated with the Mount Zion Church in Horseley
Fields. He was also the President of Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury
District of the Methodists Local Preachers' Mutual Aid Association.
In 1943 his name was added to the role of Honouree Freeman, and
he retired in 1945 having been a council member for forty-one years.
He died on the 6th May 1948 at his home, Cradley, in Compton, aged
seventy-seven.
