Alfred
George Jeffs, 1918 - 1919
Born at Stratford-Upon-Avon in 1869, Jeffs entered the
grocery trade on leaving school, and settled in Wolverhampton in
the 1880s where he and his brother, WH Jeffs, founded a wholesale
grocers. He was also associated with various other businesses in
the Midlands. He was married to the daughter of Alderman JG Wright,
and they had one son. His enthusiasm for sport led him to become
Director of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club from 1907 until
1922. He was also president of both the Albert Lawn Tennis Club
and Wolverhampton's Amateur Football Club. He entered council in
1912 representing St George's Ward, and six years later he became
Mayor. In 1920 he became an alderman. He served on committees for
Fuel and Lighting, Food Control, and Patriotic and Old Age Pensions.
Jeffs opened the first house to be built under the Housing Act in
1918. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the National Savings Movement
and Governor of the Royal Orphanage, Wolverhampton. He was also
the Borough Magistrate for twenty years and belonged to the Freemasons
Lodge of Honour. He retired from the Council in 1926 and died at
his home, Larcholme, Tettenhall, on the 26th February 1939, aged
seventy.
