Edward
Lewis Cullwick, 1907 - 1908 (April)
Cullwick was born in St.James Ward to a prominent religious
Wolverhampton family. He was linked with the area both in business
and public life. A saddler by trade, he was elected to Wolverhampton
Council in 1901, and was a member of the Lighting, Sewerage, Streets,
Electricity, Tramways and Water committees. He became an overseer
to the poor and took an active part in the Fresh Air Funds, a London
scheme that enabled town children to spend time in the countryside.
He was associated with the Wesleyan Methodist Church and for twenty-five
years was manager and treasurer of the Wesleyan Day School, although
his family had links to the Anglican church. Cullwick was married
with two children. Shortly after becoming mayor, in 1908, he was
diagnosed with a terminal illness. A ten-week confinement to bed
limited his public appearances, and the escalation of his illness
forced him to step down as mayor. His predecessor, Fred Evans, concluded
his term of office. At the time of his death, on the 1st April 1909,
Cullwick lived at Compton.
