Fred
Evans, 1907 - 1908 (1909
April-Nov)
A non-conformist member of the Mount Zion Church in
Horseley Fields, Evans worked for Wolverhampton Council for thirteen
years and was a member of the Markets, Free Library, Water and other
committees. He oversaw the extension of the wholesale market and
advocated the public abattoir, establishing the cold stores, although
he faced criticism for the latter. He helped to secure eighty acres
of land at Rough Hills to build a recreational area for public use,
offering employment opportunities for many local people during its
construction; and promoted the opening of a branch reading room
in Evans Street, Whitmore Reans. In 1984 he was the council representative
for Dunstall Ward, and was elected mayor in 1907.
