John Walton Hamp, 1900 - 1901
John Hamp was born in Wolverhampton and educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School. He became a student at the School of Medicine, Queen's College, and trained in medical science at Queen's Hospital, Birmingham, where he became clinical clerk to Sir James Sawyer, a prestigious surgeon. He was also surgical dresser to Sampson Gamgee, and eventually became resident physician at the hospital until he left to go into general practice in Wolverhampton. He became the licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow; was also a member of the Society of Apothecaries, London; was a fellow of the Medico Chirurgical and Obstetrical Societies in Edinburgh; and a member of the British Medical Association. He entered Wolverhampton Council in 1884 representing St John's Ward, and served on the Free Library, Watch, Markets, Sewerage, Finance and Health Committees. He was elected a member of the School Board for three years, and during this time became chairman of the Industrial School. He was the churchwarden at St Paul's church for around thirteen years. He was elected mayor in November 1900.
