James
Saunders, 1891 - 1892
Saunders was born in 1831 and at the age of fourteen was apprenticed
to a firm of law stationers in London. He moved to Birmingham, and
then to Wolverhampton in 1855 where he established himself as a
law stationer in Darlington Street. Around the same time he became
a member of the Congregational Chapel in Queens Street. He made
a number of connections in the legal profession and, on the advice
of professional friends, expanded his stationery business in 1863.
He also became a metal broker and commission agent, allowing him
to become an assessor and collector of taxes for three years. In
1881 he became a councillor, representing St George's Ward, and
was elected mayor ten years later.
