James Walker, 1870 - 1871

Walker began work as a shoemaker. During the 1850s he was associated with a working men's contribution scheme, enabling them to become homeowners.When the Second Wolverhampton & South Staffordshire Benefit Building Society was established Walker became their secretary. He was a Liberal candidate, elected as a member of Wolverhampton Council in 1859 and representing St John's Ward. He was elected an alderman in 1866 and he became mayor in 1870. Additionally, he was Chairman to the Public Works Committee, overseeing the completion of the Town Hall in North Street. He became a justice of the peace and was associated with the establishment of the Free Library. He died at his home in Ablow Street, Wolverhampton, on 29th April 1883.
