George Robinson, 1849 - 1850

Robinson, a solicitor, was one of the first of twelve aldermen to be elected as a councillor when Wolverhampton became a municipal borough in 1848, representing St Marks Ward. He was elected mayor on 9th November 1849 during an outbreak of cholera, and consequently spent much of his term of office coercing with the Government for financial means to assist the borough. A letter from his son Walter states that Robinson objected to having his photograph taken, and for this reason no official portrait exists.

Letter dated 15th October 1877 - can be seen in the Photograph Index - Y1/MAY/1
