George Lees
Underhill,
1861- 1862
Underhill was born on 2nd April 1814. He was associated with trade
and commerce, and became an iron merchant, holding a senior position
at a warehouse in Castle Street. He had four brothers and regularly
attended St Jude's church. His life in public service began when
he was seventeen. He was elected to the first council at the time
of the incorporation, as an alderman to St George's ward. He was
elected mayor in 1861, also becoming a borough magistrate at around
the same time. The death of Prince Albert occured during his term
of office and he recommended the erection of a memorial statue.
He lived at Newbridge until his death on the 24th January 1881,
aged sixty-seven.
