Charles Clarke,
1860 - 1861
Clarke was born in Wolverhampton to an established family, and as
such was connected with one of the largest iron foundries in the
town. He was renowned as a generous employer to the six hundred
staff working at the Hollow Ware Iron Foundry, the company that
he ran with his brother after their father's death. He held a prominent
commercial and social position in the town, and advocated generosity
towards the local poor and needy. He was an original member of the
council when Wolverhampton became a municipal borough, and progressed
from councillor to alderman and eventually to chief magistrate and
mayor. He was also chairman of several committees. Tragically Clarke
committed suicide in 1863.
